WHEREAS, according to the 2010 United States Census, it is estimated that 12 percent of Nevada residents are 65 years of age or older, and one fourth of this population experience a fall each year; and

WHEREAS, falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults, with more than 2.8 million injuries treated in emergency departments annually, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and

WHEREAS, a growing number of adults fear falling, causing them to limit their activities and social engagements, which can lead to depression, loss of mobility, and loss of functional independence; and

WHEREAS, the financial toll for older adult falls is expected to increase as the population ages and may reach $67.7 billion by 2020; and

WHEREAS, evidence-based programs reduce falls by utilizing cost-effective strategies, such as exercise programs to improve balance and strength, medication management, vision improvement, reduction of home hazards, and fall prevention education; and

WHEREAS, we join organizations across the state in raising awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults, collaborate and educate Nevadans about the impact of falls, and encourage citizens across the state to take steps to protect those who are at increased risk of falling;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim September 23, 2019, as

FALLS PREVENTION AWARENESS DAY IN NEVADA
