WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, nearly 20% of patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer only have a five-year survival rate; and

WHEREAS, the identifiable risk factors associated with esophageal cancer include obesity, chronic heartburn, indigestion, poor nutrition, tobacco use, heavy drinking, Barrett's esophagus and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD); and

WHEREAS, lack of awareness of the risk factors and symptoms, lack of routine or standard screenings, late occurrence of symptoms leading to late diagnosis, and insufficient funding for improved treatment options are all factors which have contributed to the increase and poor survival rates of people diagnosed with esophageal cancer; and

WHEREAS, millions of Americans experience heartburn and as many as one out of five Americans has GERD, with many unaware that chronic reflux could increase the risk of esophageal cancer; and

WHEREAS, during this month, we raise awareness of esophageal cancer, encouraging people to learn more about the symptoms of this disease in order to promote the importance of early detection and screening;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2019 as

ESOPHAGEAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
