Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States, 216 of whom call Nevada their home; and

WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis is one of the most common fatal genetic diseases for which there is no known cure; and

WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs, and these secretions produce life-threatening lung infections and obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to help break down and absorb food; and

WHEREAS, 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective cystic fibrosis gene; and

WHEREAS, early diagnosis of cystic fibrosis allows for early treatment, and screenings of newborns is now performed in every state across the nation; and

WHEREAS, a critical component of treating patients with cystic fibrosis includes access to innovative treatments, which can play a crucial role in the lives of patients with cystic fibrosis; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to promoting the health and welfare of all citizens of the Silver State and supports efforts to raise public awareness to improve the length and quality of life for people diagnosed with cystic fibrosis;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim May 2019 as

CYSTIC FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
