Seal of the State of Nevada

WHEREAS, there are approximately 454,500 Correctional Professionals currently serving in communities across the United States, with 2,700 of those employees currently working in the Nevada Department of Corrections in seven prisons, ten conservation camps, and two transitional housing facilities, managing the care of more than 13,000 inmates; and

WHEREAS, since Nevada’s first prison was created in 1862, the following Nevada Department of Corrections Correctional Officers have given their lives in the line of duty: F.M. Isaacs, Bryant Whitmore, George Miller, Vicent T. Tatum, Gregory Farnsworth, Danny Luxtrum, Sharrod E. Hightower, Bruce D. Stroud and Tracy Hardin, and we are eternally indebted to them for the ultimate sacrifice they made while serving the State of Nevada; and

WHEREAS, Correctional Officers, Caseworkers, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Professionals, Medical staff, Program Officers, Teachers, Re-entry Specialists and Administrative Professionals all work together towards a common goal of reducing victimization and recidivism by providing offenders with incentive for self-improvement and the tools to effect change; and WHEREAS, Correctional Officers are trained law enforcement professionals, who along with all non-custody skilled professional staff, are dedicated to educating, training, mentoring, and counseling offenders while improving public safety; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is proud to recognize Correctional Professionals Week in honor of the work ethic, dedication, and professionalism these employees display in the vital field of corrections;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of May 6-12, 2019 as

CORRECTIONAL PROFESSIONALS WEEK IN NEVADA
