WHEREAS, Computer Science Education Week is held in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper and declared nationally by Code.org and other Computer Science Education advocates; and

WHEREAS, K-12 students deserve equitable access to a high-quality, engaging and rigorous computer science and integrated technology education; and

WHEREAS, Nevada remains a national leader in computer science education through a concerted effort with the Nevada Department of Education and other agencies across the state, and understands the need to prepare K-12 students with foundational computing skills in this digital age, regardless of their age, race, gender, disability, socioeconomic status or what school they attend; and

WHEREAS, according to the Conference Board and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Nevada currently has more than 2,000 open computing jobs, which is 3.3 times the average demand rate in our state; and

WHEREAS, Nevada is committed to supporting our educators in developing high-quality standards, instruction, and training in computer science and integrated technology education, to include computational thinking, productivity tools, digital citizenship, robotics, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence; and

WHEREAS, the Silver State recognizes computer science education as a necessary workforce skill for the future economic development and long-term competitiveness of our state, and this week provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of computer science education;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of December 9 – 15, 2019 as

COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK IN NEVADA
