WHEREAS, autism is a complex developmental disorder impacting the social, communication and behavioral skills of those touched by it; and

WHEREAS, autism affects people regardless of race, religion, socio-economic status or geography, and impacts families and communities; and

WHEREAS, as more health care professionals become proficient in diagnosing autism, more children are being diagnosed on the autism spectrum, resulting in rates across the nation as high as 1 in 59 children according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and

WHEREAS, while there is no cure for autism, it is well documented that if individuals with autism receive early and intensive treatment, they lead significantly improved lives; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada continues to take critical steps to provide resources, assistance and support for children and families affected by autism through public initiatives, and with the dedicated and unwavering efforts of community and educational organizations and institutions; and

WHEREAS, individuals with autism often require a lifetime of specialized and community support services to ensure their health and safety and to support families’ resilience as they manage the psychological and financial burden Autism can present; and

WHEREAS, Autism Awareness Month provides an opportunity to educate our communities about autism and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim

Autism Awareness Month in Nevada
