WHEREAS, Sherry L. Rupert began her career in public service at the age of 21 as a Word Processing Operator for the Budget Division, serving in various state and county roles for nearly 30 years; and

WHEREAS, Sherry was born in Carson City and later enrolled as a tribal member of the Benton Paiute Tribe of Benton, California; and

WHEREAS, Sherry was appointed as Executive Director of the Nevada Indian Commission in September 2005 by Governor Kenny Guinn, and was the first American Indian woman sworn in and appointed to the Governor’s Cabinet under Governor Brian Sandoval’s administration in 2013, and was reappointed to serve in Governor Steve Sisolak’s Cabinet in January 2019; and

WHEREAS, she has remained the lead on the preservation, development, and transformation of the historic Stewart Indian School for more than a decade, educating lawmakers on the importance of creating the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her steadfast and unwavering support for the Stewart Indian School, Sherry is the Chairwoman of Nevada’s Indian Territory, was elected President of the Board of Directors for the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association, and was appointed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Rebecca Blank, to the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board; and

WHEREAS, Sherry was awarded the 2007 and 2008 Excellence in Tourism Awards, as well as the 2011 Statewide Excellence in Tourism Award from the Nevada Commission on Tourism for her success promoting and advancing tourism in Indian Country; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her important impact, the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Nevada Indian Commission have dedicated and named a building on the Stewart Indian School campus, Sherry Rupert Hall, in her honor; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada commends Sherry L. Rupert for her years of service to the citizens and visitors of our great state and offers best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement;
