
WHEREAS, Dolores Huerta, born on April 10, 1930, was exposed to community activism at a young age thanks to her father, a farm worker and union activist; and
WHEREAS, Dolores Huerta's own experiences of discrimination and her innate sense of justice and a desire to help others led her to join forces with Cesar Chavez; and
WHEREAS, together, through nonviolent protest they changed the way people who were striking were treated; and
WHEREAS, Dolores Huerta worked to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers and fight discrimination, and in 1960, she created the agricultural workers association and co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers; and
WHEREAS, Dolores Huerta, a skilled community organizer, traveled from poverty to political victory and became the second Mexican-American woman in history to be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
WHEREAS, her namesake, the Dolores Huerta Foundation, brings organizing and training skills to low-income communities by engaging and developing natural leaders; and
WHEREAS, the State of Nevada recognizes the profound impact Dolores Huerta has made on countless Americans through her devotion to promoting civil rights and social justice in our country;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim April 3, 2019, as a day in honor of
