WHEREAS, César Estrada Chávez was born on March 31, 1927, near Yuma, Arizona, later moving to California with his family where they worked as migrant farm laborers; and

WHEREAS, in response to the harsh and abusive working conditions faced by agricultural laborers, César Estrada Chávez, along with many dedicated laborers formed what would become the United Farm Workers of America; and

WHEREAS, the United Farm Workers of America worked to advocate on behalf of exploited and impoverished farm workers securing historic labor and civil rights victories for farm workers and their families; and

WHEREAS, in 1966, César Estrada Chávez led a march from Delano to Sacramento, California to raise national awareness and recognition for the dignity and worth of every farm worker and agricultural laborer; and

WHEREAS, after leading a life devoted to promoting civil rights and social justice, César Estrada Chávez passed away peacefully on April 23, 1993, and was posthumously honored in 1994 with the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, exemplifying his lasting and inspiring legacy; and

WHEREAS, the Silver State calls upon news media, educators, business and labor leaders and governmental officers to bring the attention of Nevada residents the important contributions César Estrada Chávez made to the State of Nevada and the United States;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, STEVE SISOLAK, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim
