Today, Governor Steve Sisolak announced the appointment of Laura Freed as Director of the Department of Administration. Ms. Freed’s effective start date is Monday, January 27, 2020, at which time Interim Director Peter Long will return to his position as Administrator of the Division of Human Resource Management (DHRM) within the Department of Administration.
“Laura has earned a stellar reputation as a detail-oriented and dedicated public servant during her 13 years as a budgetary analyst and administrator with the State of Nevada,” Governor Sisolak said. “Laura’s extensive fiscal and operational experience with the State makes her a great fit to run the 12 multi-faceted divisions that fall under the Department of Administration. I also want to thank Peter Long for serving as Interim Director of the Department of Administration since November. I will forever be grateful for Mr. Long’s willingness to step up and serve during this transition.”
Since 2015, Freed served as Executive Branch Budget Office II in the Governor’s Finance Office for the State of Nevada. In that role, she trained and supervised a team of Executive Branch budget officers, analyzed agency budget requests, reviewed contracts, monitored compliance, and reported to the Director and Governor’s staff. Prior to working as a budget officer, Freed served as Deputy Administrator for Regulatory Services, leading two bureaus totaling 190 FTEs within the Division of Public and Behavioral at the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services. From 2003 to 2014, she worked as a Program Analyst and Senior Program Analyst with the Legislative Counsel Bureau.
Freed graduated from the University of California Berkeley with a B.S. in Political Economy of Natural Resources. She also received an M.A. in Urban Planning from the University of Washington.
