Carson City, NV September 30, 2019
Today, Governor Steve Sisolak announced the appointment of Tyler Klimas as Executive Director of the new Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB). Governor Sisolak sponsored and signed Assembly Bill 533 during the 2019 legislative session, creating the CCB as part of his multi-pronged approach to reforming and strengthening Nevada’s legal cannabis industry and ensuring the economic opportunities it creates are available to all Nevadans. Klimas will initially serve in a transitionary capacity with the Department of Taxation’s Marijuana Enforcement Division where he will help lay the groundwork for the transfer of its regulatory authority over Nevada’s marijuana industry to the CCB.
“Tyler has been a tireless advocate for the State of Nevada from both the state and national levels,” Governor Sisolak said. “Tyler’s extensive background in Nevada state government and federal affairs, as well as his thoughtful, impartial perspective, will bring a steady and experienced hand to a complicated and ever-changing issue in our state. I’m confident that Tyler will help ensure that Nevada’s legal cannabis industry is thoughtfully regulated and economically prosperous."
Assembly Bill 533, which will ultimately be codified as Title 50 of the NRS, allows for the Governor to appoint the executive director and Board members of the CCB as soon as practicable in preparation for carrying out the provisions of the new law. The remaining CCB positions will be filled prior to July 1, 2020--the date upon which AB 533 and the associated budget bill provide for the CCB to assume all functions of the current Department of Taxation’s Division of Marijuana Enforcement. July 1, 2020 is also the first date the CCB and staff will be fully funded and will have complete statutory jurisdiction to regulate marijuana in Nevada.
Melanie Young, Executive Director of the Department of Taxation, echoed Gov. Sisolak’s praise for Klimas: “We are confident that with Tyler’s experience and knowledge in the State of Nevada and with compliance, he will lead us to our next step with the implementation of the new Cannabis Compliance Board.”
Klimas previously worked for District Strategies, a Nevadan-led, Washington, D.C.-based government affairs firm, supporting a myriad of public and private sector clients, including the Nevada Office of the Governor. In 2018, he assumed ownership of the firm, continuing to support both former Governor Brian Sandoval and current Governor Steve Sisolak, advocating for Nevada’s interests in a wide range of policy areas, including economic development, transportation, health and human services, natural resources, education and public safety. One of Klimas’s key roles was assisting the Office of the Governor in navigating the relationship between state and federal law and policymakers, which will serve as critical experience as he helps leads the CCB.
Klimas also served as the Nevada Governor’s representative to the bi-partisan National Governors Association working in concert with governors’ offices and state agencies from all 55 states and territories.
Formerly, Klimas served as Intergovernmental Affairs Manager and Press Secretary to Governor Sandoval, among other roles in the Administration, including Communications Officer at the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange.
Raised in Southern Nevada, Klimas earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
