EXECUTIVE ORDER 2020-07
ORDERING FLAGS TO HALF STAFF
WHEREAS, on March 12, 2020, I, Steve Sisolak, Governor of the State of Nevada issued a Declaration of Emergency to facilitate the State's response to the COVID-19 pandemic; and
WHEREAS, on March 13, 2020, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States declared a nationwide emergency pursuant to Sec. 501(b) of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, 42 U.S.C. 5121-5207 (the "Stafford Act"); and
WHEREAS, as of May 22, 2020, the State of Nevada Department of Health and Human Services is reporting 7,401 positive cases of COVID-19, and 381 deaths resulting from COVID-19; and
WHEREAS, on May 21, 2020, President Donald J. Trump proclaimed that “Our Nation mourns for every life lost to the coronavirus pandemic, and we share in the suffering of all those who endured pain and illness from the outbreak. Through our grief, America stands steadfast and united against the invisible enemy. May God be with the victims of this pandemic and bring aid and comfort to their families and friends;” and
WHEREAS, on May 21, 2020, President Donald J. Trump ordered the flag of the United States of America lowered to half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, May 24, 2020; and
WHEREAS, on May 21, 2020, President Donald J. Trump called on Governors of the States and Territories and officials of other areas subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff until sunset, May 24, 2020; and
WHEREAS, Article 5, Section 1 of the Nevada Constitution provides: "The supreme executive power of this State, shall be vested in a Chief Magistrate who shall be Governor of the State of Nevada."
NOW, THEREFORE, by the authority vested in me as Governor by the Constitution and laws of the State of Nevada and the United States, it is hereby ordered that:
The flags of the United States and the State of Nevada shall be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and all state public buildings and grounds, effective immediately, until sunset on Sunday, May 24, 2020, as a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.
