WHEREAS, in the United States, one person dies by suicide every 11.7 minutes, with 44,965 deaths by suicide in 2016; and

WHEREAS, Nevada has the fifth highest rate in the nation, with suicide as the leading cause of death for ages 10 to 34 and is the seventh leading cause of death for people of all ages; and

WHEREAS, in 2016, 650 Nevadans died by suicide, and friends and family members were changed forever by losing those people; and

WHEREAS, experts believe that most individuals thinking about suicide do not want to die but want to end the pain, loss, and overwhelming feelings they are experiencing; and

WHEREAS, it is important to identify behavior changes, which can signal the need to intervene and assist with access to care immediately; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, in partnership with countless community agencies and organizations, is dedicated to sharing suicide prevention and wellness activities with the community; and

WHEREAS, Suicide Prevention Week is a time to remember those individuals we have lost to suicide and call greater attention to suicide prevention efforts and this week the Silver State will display purple lights at the Capitol and Governor’s Mansion in Carson City to promote awareness;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  the week of September 10 -16, 2018 as

 Suicide Prevention Week in Nevada
