WHEREAS, the adoption of dogs and cats as companions has documented benefits for families and individuals of all ages, and the majority of Nevadans know the pleasure and value of dogs and cats as pets and family members; and

WHEREAS, pet adoption from animal shelters saves the lives of homeless dogs and cats; and

WHEREAS, the residents of the Silver State support more than 120 non-profit animal shelters, rescue groups and organizations dedicated to helping animals through donations and volunteering their time; and

WHEREAS, the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation and Maddie’s Fund, inspired by their love of a special dog named Maddie, have committed to invest $15 million over three years to improve the lives of dogs and cats in Nevada through their campaign, Maddie’s Pet Project in Nevada; and

WHEREAS, the generosity of the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation will enable the State of Nevada to become a model for innovative lifesaving best practices in animal shelters; and

WHEREAS, April 27 and 28 will be Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days at shelters across Nevada which will allow individuals to adopt a dog or cat free of charge, while the shelter will receive $300 for each adopted pet from Maddie’s Pet Project in Nevada; and

WHEREAS, the beloved Duffield family dog, Maddie, who has inspired their tremendous generosity for animals, was born on April 26; and

WHEREAS, Maddie’s Day is an opportunity to volunteer, adopt a pet or become a foster caregiver at a local animal shelter and celebrate the benefits of dogs and cats this day and throughout the year;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  April 26, 2018 as

 Maddie’s Day in Nevada
