WHEREAS, Nevada is proud to recognize the children and their relatives who raise them in kinship care, and who ensure their safety, promote their well-being and establish a stable household for these young people to thrive; and

WHEREAS, nationally more than 2 million children are living with grandparents and other relatives, and many young people in kinship care live in the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, Nevadans join with grandparents and relatives residing in urban, rural and suburban households in every county of the state who step forward out of love and loyalty to care for relatives when the child’s biological parents are no longer able to do so; and

WHEREAS, the month of September is an opportunity to recognize the children who, through the unconditional support of relatives, have successfully addressed the emotional trauma of losing their parents; and

WHEREAS, one in eleven children will live within a kinship family during their childhood and kinship care provides the best opportunity to retain the child’s cultural heritage and community ties; and

WHEREAS, the month of September is an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges faced by children, grandparents and other relatives participating in kinship care as they work in partnership with the education, legal, social services, mental health, justice and other systems to access services and provide care for children;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  September 2018 as

 Kinship Care Month in Nevada
