WHEREAS, Elgen Marion Long was born August 12, 1927 in McMinnville, Oregon and he served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946, flying more than 100 combat missions; and

WHEREAS, his flying career spanned 60 years and he flew for almost 45,000 hours; and

WHEREAS, along with his wife, Marie K. Long, he investigated the disappearance of aviator Amelia Earhart and wrote the book ‘Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved’ which was published in 1999; and

WHEREAS, in 1949, Elgen Long volunteered for the newly formed Israeli Air Force where he was a member of the ‘Ironmen Crew,’ and he flew 12 missions to bring Jewish refugees from Yemen to Israel, saving almost 2,000 refugees, and he is the author of ‘On Eagles’ Wings’ which shares the history of this brave and noble mission that brought a total of 49,000 people to safety through the secret operation; and

WHEREAS, in honor or Captain Long’s heroic efforts throughout the mission he will be recognized at the Israel @70 Celebration in Reno; and

WHEREAS, Captain Long has had a distinguished career as a decorated pilot and set 15 aviation records and firsts, including being the first to have crossed Antarctica alone via the South Pole; and

WHEREAS, this world-renowned pilot has been recognized with many other awards including being named the FAI Gold Air Medal Outstanding Sports Pilot in the World, he has received the Wright Brothers ‘Master Pilot’ award for 50 years of dedicated service to aviation safety and The Institute of Navigation Superior Achievement Award as practicing navigator;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  do hereby recognize
