WHEREAS, many individuals with Down syndrome are active and respected citizens of Nevada; and

WHEREAS, possessing a wide range of abilities, people with Down syndrome contribute to education, employment, social and recreational opportunities across the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, Down syndrome is a genetic condition and there are more than 400,000 people with Down syndrome living in the United States representing a variety of ethnic, religious and socio-economic groups; and

WHEREAS, early intervention, therapies, vocational training and postsecondary education opportunities enable those with Down syndrome to prepare for gainful employment and independent living; and

WHEREAS, all citizens should have an equal opportunity to achieve their goals and reach their full potential to lead healthy, productive lives, complete with employment, hobbies and relationships; and

WHEREAS, the selection of March 21st as World Down Syndrome Day signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome, and which is observed around the globe, and serves as an opportunity to recognize our continued commitment to celebrate and honor the talents, potential, contributions and achievements of those living with Down syndrome; and

WHEREAS, people with Down syndrome are important to our communities and valued members of the Nevada family;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  March 21, 2018 as

 Down Syndrome Awareness Day in Nevada
