WHEREAS, burn injuries continue to be a leading cause of accidental death and injury in our nation and almost one-third of all burn injuries occur to children younger than 15; and

WHEREAS, annually, approximately 486,000 people in the United States receive medical care for treatment of burn injuries, and in 2016 there were 3,280 deaths from fire and smoke inhalation and another 40,000 people were treated in hospitals for burn related injuries according to the American Burn Association; and

WHEREAS, children younger than five are more than twice as likely to suffer burn injuries that require emergency medical treatment and young adults ages 20-29 have a probability of burn injury that is roughly 1.5 times the risk of the general population; and

WHEREAS, today 96.8 percent of those who suffer burn injuries will survive, however, many survivors will sustain serious scarring, life-long physical disabilities, and adjustment difficulties; and

WHEREAS, National Burn Awareness Week is an opportunity to educate the community and bring together organizations to share information, and burn safety education and prevention efforts which continue to reduce the number of people who suffer burns each year; and

WHEREAS, significant research and medical advances have improved burn care and treatment, aided rehabilitation, shortened hospital stays, and increased burn survival rates, and after-care support for the physical and emotional effects of burns has also played a key role in the successful reintegration of burn survivors into our communities; and

WHEREAS, many people devote their lives and careers to treating, caring for, supporting and rehabilitating burn injury survivors, including those performing vital work in burn research and development, and there are dedicated firefighters who risk their lives every day to protect others;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  the week of February 4 – 10, 2018 as

 Burn Awareness Week in Nevada
