WHEREAS, commuters who travel by bicycle employ a clean, quiet and efficient mode of transportation while helping reduce harmful exhaust pollutants, improving air quality and saving on fuel and maintenance costs associated with driving to work or school; and

WHEREAS, bicycling is an environmentally conscious choice that demonstrates the Silver State’s diverse transportation options and livable communities; and

WHEREAS, educating our communities about cycling as recreation and transportation increases the safety of bicyclists by making drivers more aware of their presence on the roads, and creating bicycle-friendly communities can improve quality of life by fostering community spirit, improving traffic safety and stimulating economic growth; and

WHEREAS, bicycling in the community is an opportunity to learn about the places we live and work while enjoying the outdoors and maintaining a healthy lifestyle; and

WHEREAS, physical activity such as bicycling can be a benefit to employers by reducing healthcare costs, decreasing absenteeism, increasing productivity and reducing chronic diseases related to obesity; and

WHEREAS, May has been declared National Bike Month since 1956 and the week of May 14 through 18 has been named Bike to Work Week and employers are encouraged to recognize the benefits of cycling as transportation; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada encourages cyclists to remember and observe all safety measures, including wearing a helmet and obeying traffic laws, and education on the safe operation of bicycles and motor vehicles and shared use of streets is important to ensure the safety and respect on Nevada roadways; and

WHEREAS, the month of May is an opportunity to encourage residents and visitors to enjoy the benefits of bicycling, recognize the importance of bicycle safety and demonstrate mutual respect and awareness of cyclists and drivers on our streets;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  May 2018 as

 Bike Month in Nevada
