WHEREAS, assistance dogs transform the lives of their human partners by providing them with a new sense of freedom and independence while they serve as devoted partners, companions, helpers and friends; and

WHEREAS, assistance dogs include guide dogs, hearing alert dogs, service dogs and seizure alert/response dogs which each perform a specific job; and

WHEREAS, guide dogs assist those with vision loss, leading these individuals while crossing streets, entering and exiting buildings, elevators and navigating stairs and other obstacles; and

WHEREAS, service dogs assist those with disabilities with walking, balancing, dressing, retrieving and carrying items, opening doors and drawers, pushing buttons, pulling wheelchairs and aiding with household chores; and

WHEREAS, hearing assistance dogs help people with hearing loss by alerting them to the presence of specific sounds such as doorbells, telephones, crying babies, sirens, people, timers or sensors and alarms; and

WHEREAS, seizure alert/response dogs alert or respond to medical conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, epilepsy, panic or anxiety attacks, post-traumatic stress and seizures; and

WHEREAS, medical alert/medical response dogs alert or respond to oncoming medical conditions including heart attacks, strokes, panic or anxiety attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder; and

WHEREAS, Assistance Dog Week provides an opportunity to commemorate and raise awareness of the selfless way assistance dogs help individuals throughout our communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  the week of August 5 -11, 2018 as

 Assistance Dog Week in Nevada
