WHEREAS, The Nevada Sagebrush was founded on October 19, 1893 as an independent student newspaper for the University of Nevada, and was originally known as The Student Record; and

WHEREAS, Charles Magill, the son of a Reno minister, served as the newspaper's first editor; and

WHEREAS, in 1912, the name of the paper was changed to The Nevada Sagebrush which the editors felt was more representative of the location of the university; and

WHEREAS, Sagebrush alumni have gone on to distinguished careers in journalism, literature, education, business, military and public service; and

WHEREAS, the paper has served as a news source for generations and has provided an opportunity for Nevada students to hone their skills, learn from their peers and contribute to their community through coverage of events that impact the students and staff of the University; and

WHEREAS, The Nevada Sagebrush has received countless state, regional and national awards for writing, editing, design and innovation; and

WHEREAS, for the past 125 years, The Nevada Sagebrush has remained an independent voice and news source for students on the University of Nevada, Reno campus and throughout the greater Reno community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  October 19, 2018 as a day in honor of

 The Nevada Sagebrush
