WHEREAS, in the United States, one person dies by suicide every 11.9 minutes, with 44,193 deaths by suicide in our country during 2015 and most of these deaths are preventable; and

WHEREAS, far too many Nevadans die by suicide each year and it is the second leading cause of death for ages 10 to 34 and is the eighth leading cause of death for people of all ages; and

WHEREAS, in 2015, 558 Nevadans died by suicide, and thousands of friends and family members were changed forever by losing a loved one; and

WHEREAS, experts believe that most individuals thinking about suicide do not want to die, they just want to end the feelings of pain or loss they are experiencing, and it is important to identify behavior changes which signal the need to intervene and assist with access to care immediately; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, in partnership with community agencies and organizations, is offering a week of suicide prevention and wellness activities; and

WHEREAS, this week is an opportunity to gather and remember those who have been lost to suicide and call greater attention to the state's suicide prevention efforts;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  September 9 - 16, 2017 as

 Suicide Prevention Week in Nevada
