WHEREAS, school social workers serve as important members of the educational team, playing a central role in creating a positive school climate and partnerships, as we help our students build a foundation for the future; and

WHEREAS, in 2015 the Nevada Legislature approved $17 million, as part of the Governor's budget, to fund the Office for a Safe and Respectful Learning Environment within the Nevada Department of Education to support statewide efforts focused on school climate and social-emotional learning; and

WHEREAS, this office has hired 227 Social Workers in Schools professionals serving 166 campuses across 11 school districts and seven charter academies in Nevada; and

WHEREAS, school social workers provide critical services to students and families through integral grants, programs, and departments in school districts and communities, and are especially skilled in providing services to students who face challenges and barriers to learning; and

WHEREAS, school social workers bring together members of the educational community with professional and community resources, to help students realize their fullest potential; and

WHEREAS, acting as liaisons with local, state and federal agencies, school social workers help to develop and support a broad range of resources in support of schools' educational missions; and

WHEREAS, school social workers advocate for schools, families, children, and youth in the legislative arena by supporting proposals to promote positive school climate, prevent bullying, improve programs for at-risk children and youth, and support the academic success of all students;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  the week of March 6-10, 2017 as

 SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK WEEK IN NEVADA
