WHEREAS, August 31st is a day people worldwide will stand alongside the friends and families of overdose victims to reflect on those who have lost their lives or been affected by this epidemic; and

WHEREAS, between 2010 and 2015, there were 2,502 resident deaths attributed to drug overdose involving opioids in Nevada and 9,597 emergency department visits and inpatient hospitaladmissions related to opioid poisoning in Nevada; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to stemming the tide of prescription drug a use and the consequences that accompany it, and in 2015, Senate Bill 459 was signed into law, and (his legislation contains a "Good Samaritan" provision which extends legal protections to individuals who in good faith seeks medical assistance for someone who is experiencing an overdose; and

WHEREAS, the Controlled Substance Abuse Prevention Act, Assembly Bill 474, was signed in 2017, and this legislation seeks to address prescription drug misuse, abuse and diversion by mandating prescribing protocols for all prescribers of controlled substances; and

WHEREAS, in addition to serving as a day for remembrance, Overdose Awareness Day i an opportunity to educate the community and reduce the stigma of drug-related death; and

WHEREAS, we join with organizations statewide in the fight for Nevada's families anal the future of our state and nation as we work to end drug abuse and overdose;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  August 31, 2017 as

 Overdose Awareness Day in Nevada
