WHEREAS, mining is an integral part of Nevada's history and vital to its future, and according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately 12,200 people employed by the Nevada mining industry; and
WHEREAS, Nevada produces 20 metals and minerals, which account f or about 14 percent of the nation's non-fuel mineral production; and
WHEREAS, Nevada ranks fourth in the world in gold production, after China, Russia and Australia, and is also a global leader in the production of diatomite; and
WHEREAS, our clothing, computers, cars and roads begin with mining, and everything harvested, manufactured or transported require minerals that come from the earth; and
WHEREAS, the mining industry currently adds more than $10 billion to Nevada's gross domestic product through mining operations and mining-related companies located in every county of this state; and
WHEREAS, the Nevada mining industry is actively engaged in most Nevada communities through educational programs such as scholarships, mineral workshops for teachers, classroom presentations, career fairs, and many other earth science programs; and
WHEREAS, Nevada Mineral Industry Week is an opportunity for Nevadans to learn more about the history of mining in this state and the role it plays in the development of the culture and economy of its people;
