WHEREAS, Law Day is an occasion of public acknowledgement of our nation's and the Silver State's heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law; and

WHEREAS, the United States Congress has statutorily designated the first day of May as the annual day for commemoration of Law Day and the theme of Law Day is "The Fourteenth Amendment: Transforming American Democracy," in recognition of the numerous contributions to American law and society of one of the most often cited provisions of our Constitution, and its pivotal role in shaping American history; and

WHEREAS, the Fourteenth Amendment, in the nearly century and a half that has elapsed since its ratification, has guaranteed due process of law and equal protection under the law, both of which are fundamental tenets of American democracy; and

WHEREAS, the Fourteenth Amendment is a safeguard against tyranny, ensuring that the protections set forth in the Bill of Rights are enforceable against state and local government actions that infringe upon fundamental liberties for which countless Americans have bravely fought and died; and

WHEREAS, the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment represented a monumental step forward for our nation, enshrining the principle that no level of government can encroach upon life, liberty, or property rights without due process of law, thereby enhancing the efforts of America’s founders to form a more perfect union; and

WHEREAS, the Fourteenth Amendment has served as the basis of, and inspiration for, landmark civil rights legislation and court decisions protecting and advancing the rights of all Americans; and

WHEREAS, promoting public understanding of the roots of our freedom is an important component of the civic education of the citizens of the United States and of the State of Nevada;
