WHEREAS, each year in cities and communities around the world International Women's Day is observed to celebrate social, economic, cultural, and political contributions and achievements of women; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada remains committed to the fundamental principle that all citizens, regardless of gender, deserve equal opportunities to realize their full potential, to pursue opportunities and ambitions; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada has a long and proud tradition of fostering equality for women, granting women the right to vote in 1914, six years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution; and

WHEREAS, countless women have contributed in extraordinary ways to the history and development of the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, women play a vital role in worldwide social, economic, cultural, and political development; and

WHEREAS, International Women's Day, celebrated each year during Women's History Month, is a global recognition of the important progress women have made toward equality; and

WHEREAS, International Women's Day is an opportunity to recognize, reflect, and celebrate the progress made to advance women's equality, and to expand opportunities for women in today's society;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  March 8, 2017 as

 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY IN NEVADA
