WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis affects the lungs and digestive system of 30,000 children and adults in the United States, and approximately 250 citizens of Nevada, but more than 10 million people unknowingly carry the defective CF gene but have no symptoms; and

WHEREAS, cystic fibrosis is one of the most common fatal genetic diseases for which there is no known cure; and

WHEREAS, the average life expectancy of a person with cystic fibrosis is 37- years-old; and

WHEREAS, advances in cystic fibrosis gene research have significantly expanded the gene, respiratory and pharmaceutical treatments, which have doubled the life expectancy of those afflicted in the last two decades; and

WHEREAS, through the dedicated efforts of national and community organizations, awareness of the disease has increased early diagnosis, and quality of life has been greatly improved for those with cystic fibrosis; and

WHEREAS, thanks to those efforts the public has increased knowledge and understanding of cystic fibrosis, and the search for a cure is as promising as ever;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  May 2017

 Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month in Nevada
