WHEREASin 2007, the Nevada Youth Legislature was created by Senate Bill 247, sponsored by Senator Valerie Wiener, to give students a voice in State government and allow them to influence issues that are important to Nevada youth; and 

WHEREASduring the past decade, the Nevada Youth Legislature has given more than 190 high school students the opportunity to learn the legislative process and take an active role in State government, and has helped develop their skills working with constituents, addressing media inquiries, and developing listening, presentation, and negotiation skills; and 

WHEREASNevada Youth Legislators receive training in the legislative process during monthly meetings that include discussions with sitting legislators and presentations from State and community professionals; and 

WHEREASthe Nevada Youth Legislators gain insight on how to conduct town hall meetings, organize and lead their own District Youth Advisory Councils, deliver testimonies before public decision-making bodies, represent their constituents, and create and select a Bill Draft Request to present to the Legislature; and 

WHEREASthe Nevada Youth Legislature has presented five bills to the Nevada Legislature, three of which were passed and signed into law and address issues regarding teen-mentoring programs, model curriculum for English language arts and mathematics, and medical amnesty f or under-age drinkers under certain circumstances; in addition, a bill providing academic credits for high school internships and a resolution encouraging university and college safety programs were also successful; and

WHEREASthe Nevada Youth Legislature program has been recognized f or its outstanding training program with 32 prestigious awards from several state, national, and international organizations; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  January 5, 2017 as a day in honor of the

 Nevada Youth Legislature
