WHEREAS, George Wojciech Kielak was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1927, and he fought in the Warsaw Uprising with the Polish Home Army in 1944, and was captured and sent to a POW camp in Germany for the duration of the occupation of Poland; and

WHEREAS, after his release, Mr. Kielak moved to the UK and spent time in the British Army before moving to Rochester, New York, where he had family to sponsor him, and after establishing himself, he became an insurance salesman, later being promoted to an executive position; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Kielak moved to Omaha, Nebraska where he became active in the Polish community and helped establish a school and Polish/American institutions there, and during the time of martial law in Poland he helped raise more than $100,000 to buy food and grain that he accompanied to Poland to ensure it was given to those it was meant for; and

WHEREAS, George later moved to Las Vegas where he continued his mission to help those in need by opening his home, sponsoring immigrants, assisting with translations for tax information, the court system and hospitals when needed; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Kielak had a deep and lasting impact on many residents of the Silver State and his work with veterans groups, assistance in the creation of the first Polish School of Las Vegas and willingness to help those in need has made our state a better place, and he will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his community and his pride in his Polish heritage; and

WHEREAS, George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary, and numerous relatives in New York; and

WHEREAS, George Kielak passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017, and the thoughts and prayers of the Nevada family are with his family, friends and loved ones;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  as a day in honor of

 George Kielak
