WHEREAS, Cèsar Estrada Chávez was born on March 31, 1927 near Yuma, Arizona, later moving to California with his family where they worked as migrantfarm laborers; and

WHEREAS, before the rise of the United Fann Workers of America, working conditions for agricultural laborers were often harsh and abusive, failing to provide even the most basic necessities such as clean drinking water or safe working conditions; and

WHEREAS, in 1962, Cèsar Chávez, along with many dedicated laborers, formed what would become the United Farm Workers of America, which worked to advocate on behalf of exploited and impoverished farm workers, and which secured historic labor and civil rights victories for farm workers and their families; and

WHEREAS, in 1966 Cèsar Chávez led a march from Delano to Sacramento, California in order to raise national awareness and recognition f or the dignity and worth of every farm worker and agricultural laborer;

WHEREAS, after leading a life devoted to promoting civil rights and social justice, Cesar Estrada Chavez passed away peacefully on April 23, 1993, leaving a lasting and inspiring legacy as a champion of equality and an advocate for the poor, the persecuted, and the oppressed; and

WHEREASCèsar Estrada Chávez was posthumously honored in 1994 with the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, exemplifying the profound impact his life and legacy have had, and the role he played as an inspiration to countless Americans;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  March 31, 2017 as a day in honor of

 Cèsar Estrada Chávez
