WHEREAS, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is an integrated education approach that focuses on active teaching and learning, centered on relevant experiences, problem solving, and critical thinking processes; and

WHEREAS, Nevada’s future depends on its students being prepared to meet challenges, and those who have a solid foundation in real-world problem solving and experimentation, the basis of a rigorous STEM education, become confident, critical thinkers with the creativity to find solutions to the challenges they face; and

WHEREAS, STEM jobs are projected to grow about 50 percent faster than non-STEM jobs and these jobs pay more than non-STEM jobs with similar levels of education; and

WHEREAS, many people are not aware of the many exiting career opportunities available to those with STEM skills or that half of STEM jobs require an associate degree or less; and

WHEREAS, Nevada strives to be a leader in innovative technology and preparing its students for the future by equipping them with the tools needed for success; and

WHEREAS, through the Year of STEM, each month will be dedicated to an emerging industry sector, including advanced manufacturing and construction, STEAM, coding and computer science, mining, clean energy, gaming, STEM education and teaching, engineering and healthcare; and

WHEREAS, the Governor's Office of Science Innovation and Technology (OSIT) is tasked with creating a Nevada where we align our education system and workforce development training to prepare today's students for the jobs of tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of the Year of STEM, OSlT has created the Nevada STEM Hub website to educate Nevadans about careers, provide resources- f or educators, and organize a calendar of STEM-related events statewide;

WHEREAS, promoting STEM education as we work to build the new Nevada, with a focus on raising awareness, reducing the skills gap, and increasing equity, will prepare the workforce of the Silver State to meet the demands of its growing technology and innovation focused economy no matter the pathway they choose;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  the 2016-2017 school years as

 YEAR OF STEM IN NEVADA
