WHEREAS, the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic has been one of the greatest global health threats of all time, having claimed the lives of more than 35 million people worldwide, and an estimated 10,100 Nevadans are currently living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) which, if not adherent to treatment, can progress into AIDS; and

WHEREASin order to address the epidemic and reach zero new transmissions, community efforts on stigma reduction, public health education, and high-impact prevention efforts must be heightened; and

WHEREAS, "Hands up for HIV Prevention" is the theme used by organizations nationwide in recognition of World AIDS Day, and work to reduce new HIV infections, increase access to care and improve health outcomes for those living with HIV, reducing HIV-related disparities and health inequities, and achieve a more coordinated national response to the HIV epidemic, is promoted through this campaign; and

WHEREAS, in the past decade, public health professionals have emphasized the importance of integrating HIV prevention and treatment programs including Nevada's Ryan White Programs, which have continued to expand exponentially, bringing life-saving medical and support services to Nevadans living with HIV/AIDS; and

WHEREAS, HIV prevention programs, coordinating with health districts and communities, bring preventative services to am, increase understanding, enhance tolerance, and ultimately work toward achieving an AIDS-free generation within the next decade;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  December 1, 2016 as

 WORLD AIDS DAY IN NEVADA
