WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to promoting health and wellness education initiatives and campaigns, particularly those intended to raise awareness among populations at higher risks of certain diseases and disabilities; and

WHEREAS, approximately every five minutes, a woman in the United States is told that she has lung cancer; and

WHEREAS, lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women in the United States, and the lung cancer death rate in women has more than doubled over the past 35 years; and

WHEREAS, women are disproportionally burdened with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) compared to men in terms of illness and death, and asthma is also more common among women than among men; and

WHEREAS, greater advocacy and increased awareness will result in enhanced and better treatment for women with lung cancer, COPD, asthma and other lung diseases and will ultimately save lives; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada commends the American Lung Association other organizations in Nevada who are committed to fighting lung cancer and other lung diseases, and who are working to unite women with a collective strength and determination to promote lung health; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  May 10-16, 2016, as

 WOMEN'S LUNCH HEALTH WEEK IN NEVADA
