WHEREAS, promoting the health and wellness of Nevada's citizens includes supporting efforts and initiatives to increase public awareness regarding genetic disorders and harmful conditions, particularly rare conditions and those about which little is known or which have no cure; and

WHEREAS, Williams syndrome is a rare genetic condition that is present at birth, a m s as many as 30,000 individuals in the United States and is characterized by medical and cognitive problems including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities; and

WHEREAS, the Williams Syndrome Association (WSA), is a non-profit organization committed to providing resources for those living with Williams syndrome and supporting the efforts of doctors, researchers and educators working to improve the quality of life for those who live with Williams syndrome; and

WHEREAS, the WSA has designated the month of May, 2016, as Williams Syndrome Awareness Month in order to educate the public regarding this disorder and promote broader awareness of the needs of persons living with Williams syndrome; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada commends the WSA for its advocacy on behalf of those living with Williams syndrome and proudly joins states and communities participating in Williams Syndrome Awareness Month, with continued commitment to promoting access to care, resources, and supportive service for Nevada's families who have been touched by Williams syndrome;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  May, 2016

 WILLIAMS SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH IN NEVADA
