WHEREAS, every year in the United States, 40,000 children are born with congenital heart defects, the most frequently occurring birth defect and leading cause of infant death due to birth defects; and

WHEREAS, more than a million families across America are facing the challenges and hardships of raising children with congenital heart defects, many of whom tragically do not live to see their first birthday; and

WHEREAS, some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed until months or years after birth, and undiagnosed congenital heart conditions cause many cases of sudden cardiac death in youth athletes; and

WHEREAS, despite these statistics, newborn and young athletes are not routinely screened for congenital heart defects and a disproportionately small amount of funding is available for congenital heart defect research and support; and

WHEREAS, twice as many children die from congenital heart defects each year than from all forms of childhood cancer combined, and continued efforts to support research, treatment, and ultimately a cure for congenital heart defects are critical; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada proudly joins communities across the nation participating in the Walk with the Heart of a Child initiative, honoring children who are survivors living with congenital heart defects, paying tribute to the lives that have been lost due to this dreadful condition, and promoting a greater awareness of the need for effective treatment and early diagnosis of congenital heart defects;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  February 27, 2016, as

 WALK WITH THE HEART OF A CHILD DAY IN NEVADA
