WHEREAS, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names is a federal entity created in 1890 and established in its present form in 1947 to maintain uniform geographic name usage throughout the Federal Government; and

WHEREAS, the Board is comprised of federal representatives from agencies involved with geographic information, population, ecology, and public lands management, and has oversight over the and procedures related to the official naming of geographic features; and

WHEREAS, the critical work and essential functions of the Board are rooted in complex geographic issues that resulted from the Civil War, and the role of the Board expanded after World War II, becoming a model from which more than 50 foreign nations have adopted similar bodies; and

WHEREAS, the Board continues to execute its mission in the modern era, utilizing 21st century technology to help ensure standardization and collaboration among federal, state, and local stakeholders, and helping to preserve our nation's traditions, local histories and cultures, and our national heritage; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada warmly welcomes the US. Board on Geographic Names as it convenes in the Silver State for its annual confidence, with appreciation to the Board and to those who support its role and mission for their dedication and commitment to serving our nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  May 3-9, as

 U.S. BOARD ON GEOGRAPHIC NAMES APPRECIATION
