WHEREAS, in the United States one person dies by suicide every 12.3 minutes, with 42,773 deaths by suicide in our country during 2014 and most of these deaths are preventable; and

WHEREAS, in Nevada, suicide is the second leading cause of death for those age 15 to 34 and is the eighth leading cause of death for people of all ages; and

WHEREAS, , in 2014, 573 Nevadans died by suicide, and thousands friends and family members were changed forever by this loss; and

WHEREAS, experts believe that most individuals thinking about suicide do not want to die, they just want to end the pain they are experiencing and it is important to identify behavior changes which signal the need to intervene and assist with access to care immediately; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention, in partnership with countless community agencies and organizations, is offering a week of suicide prevention and wellness activities; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention will be celebrating its 10th anniversary and the 10th annual statewide "Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope" on Saturday, September 10, 2016 where 14 communities will walk to remember those individuals we have lost to suicide and call greater attention to the state's suicide prevention efforts;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  September 5-11, 2016 as

 SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK IN NEVADA
