WHEREAS, the month of April each year has been designated as paleontological Awareness Month in Nevada; and

WHEREAS, the study of paleontology seeks to uncover information about the history of the Earth through the exploration and discovery of fossils, their environment, and their natural histories; and

WHEREAS, the efforts of state and local officers, private and non-profit groups and foundations, schools, businesses, and other public and private entities to work toward the goal of preserving the paleontology resources of Nevada are inspired by an appreciation for the importance of understanding Earth's history; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada has adopted the Ichthyosaur as the official state fossil, and is the only state to possess a complete skeleton of this extinct marine reptile; and

WHEREAS, Nevada's paleontology sites include the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park and Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, which continue to attract renowned scientists and distinguished researchers, making Nevada a notable contributor to the science of paleontology; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada proudly celebrates its natural history and heritage and the special role that paleontology continues to play in helping us to understand our past as we reach for a brighter future; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  April 2016 as

 PALEONTOLOGICAL AWARENESS DAY
