WHEREAS, encouraging and promoting a culture of healthy and active living directly supports the State of Nevada’s goal of maintaining a high quality of life for its residents; and

WHEREAS, providing young people with opportunities to learn the importance of healthy lifestyle choices, including the importance of daily physical activity and exercise, is a critical public health and wellness objective; and

WHEREAS, the health benefits associated with physical activity at an early age play a leading role in reducing rates of heart disease, diabetes and other obesity-related health problems among children; and

WHEREAS, walking and bicycling to school not only provide meaningful opportunities to encourage physical activity, but also reduce traffic congestion in the vicinity of schools and contribute to enhanced safety on the roads, as well as improvements in air quality; and

WHEREAS, students walking and bicycling to school with parents and caregivers fosters opportunities to mentor children about pedestrian and bicycle safety and its benefits related to health and the environment, while encouraging families to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines; and

WHEREAS, on March 16, 2016, Nevada students and families will join with schools and community organizations across the state to participate in the 9 Annual Nevada Moves Day, celebrating the benefits of walking and bicycling to school and promoting a broader awareness of the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  March 14-18, 2016, as
