WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately one-third of all deaths, and stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States as well as a leading cause of disability; and

WHEREAS, obesity is a growing national health concern, with nearly one in three American young people either overweight or obese, and childhood obesity is now the top health concern among parents in the United States; and

WHEREAS, while regular physical activity can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and may increase life expectancy, only 36 percent of children and 44 percent of adults participate in the recommended amount of daily physical activity; and

WHEREAS, moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for an individual's overall health, including controlling body weight, blood cholesterol, and blood pressure, all of which help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke; and

WHEREAS, on National Walking Day, the American Heart Association will kick-off a month-long campaign to encourage Americans to become more physically active, and will invite all Americans to take a 30-minute walk with family, friends, or colleagues; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to fostering a culture of healthy living, and joins the American Heart Association and states and communities across the nation in support of National Walking Day to promote regular physical activity and its role in health, wellness, and a high quality of life;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  April 6, 2016
