WHEREAS, muscular dystrophy is comprised of a group of genetic muscular and neuromuscular diseases that range in severity, affecting approximately 200,000 individuals in the United States; and

WHEREAS, all muscular dystrophies result in progressive muscle weakness, from mild muscle weakness to complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles, including those used for breathing and/or swallowing; and

WHEREAS, medical researchers are working to investigate possible cures and treatments for muscular dystrophy, with four times as many new clinical trials currently underway than in the 1990s, and there are more new drugs expected in the next four years than in the previous five decades in the fight for a cure for neuromuscular diseases; and

WHEREAS, raising public awareness of these diseases will continue to facilitate the discovery of new treatments and cures, as well as promote funding for support and services for families in the State of Nevada affected by muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular diseases; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada proudly supports efforts to raise awareness regarding the needs of those living with muscular dystrophy, as well as initiatives intended to educate the public about muscular dystrophy, and hereby encourages all Nevadans to support these initiatives by participating in Light it Up Green for Muscular Dystrophy Month;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  August, 2016 as

 MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY AWARENESS AND LIGHT IT UP GREEN MONTH IN NEVADA
