WHEREAS, promoting the health, safety, and welfare of vulnerable populations, including infants and children, is a critical function of Nevada's state government and public health agencies; and

WHEREAS, Heterotaxy syndrome is a congenital condition affecting infants and young children that adversely impacts the development, placement and presence of internal organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and spleen; and

WHEREAS, children diagnosed with Heterotaxy syndrome and heart disease often require specialized treatment and care, including medication to help prevent heart failure, organ transplants, special vaccinations, and surgery to correct abnormalities; and

WHEREAS, without corrective surgery, most children with Heterotaxy syndrome and significant heart problems will not survive beyond the first year of life, and those who survive to adulthood face special challenges associated with this condition; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada supports efforts to increase awareness regarding Heterotaxy syndrome and the needs of those who have been diagnosed with this condition, with continued commitment to promoting access to care and supportive services for Nevada families touched by Heterotaxy syndrome;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  May 14, 2016 as

 HETEROTAXY SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY
