WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors to the Silver State; and

WHEREAS, home fires in the United States resulted in 2,745 civilian deaths in 2014 according to the National Fire Protection Association; and

WHEREAS, three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties with no smoke alarms or without working smoke alarms; and

WHEREAS, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half; and

WHEREAS, smoke alarms should be replaced at least once every ten years; and

WHEREAS, Nevada’s first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and injuries through prevention and awareness education; and

WHEREAS, the national theme, "Don't Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years," works to bring awareness to the public about the importance of replacing smoke alarms;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  October 9-15, 2016 as

 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK IN NEVADA
