WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to promoting public health awareness initiatives and campaigns that help to educate citizens regarding detection, treatment, and prevention of harmful diseases and disorders; and

WHEREAS, esophageal cancer is a serious disease and one of the deadliest forms of cancer, claiming the life of one American approximately every 36 minutes; and

WHEREAS, fewer than one in five patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer survive beyond five years after diagnosis, due in part to the advanced stage at which esophageal cancer is typically detected and diagnosed; and

WHEREAS, conditions that increase the risk factors for esophageal cancer, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Barrett's Esophagus, are more easily detected at early stages and can increase a patient's chances of detecting and effectively treating esophageal cancer; and

WHEREAS, continued efforts to raise awareness regarding esophageal cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment of esophageal cancer directly support the objective of cultivating healthy communities across the State of Nevada;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  April, 2016 as

 ESOPHAGEAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
