WHEREAS, throughout the history of the American West, and through today, cowboy poets have played a large part in preserving America's western heritage, and the culture of Nevada, through poetry; and

WHEREAS, the long tradition and enduring qualities of these poems and their stories demonstrate that cowboy poetry is part of a long-cherished legacy of western folk life and of today's vibrant working West; and

WHEREAS, Cowboy Poetry Week was inaugurated in 2002 by unanimous resolution of the United States Senate, taking place during the third week in April every year and coinciding with National Poetry Month; and

WHEREAS, Nevadans proudly celebrate the rich history and culture of the Silver State, including the tradition of cowboy poetry and the unique artistic expression cowboy , poetry represents, and the special place it has in the Nevada story; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada proudly hosts the Genoa Cowboy Poetry Festival and the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering each year, reflecting our state's commitment to celebrating cowboy poetry and its importance to Nevada's history, heritage, and cultural vitality;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  April 17-23, 2016

 COWBOY POETRY WEEK IN NEVADA
