WHEREAS, one in every 2,500 pregnancies are diagnosed with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a potentially life threatening condition adversely affecting pulmonary development; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that of the tens of thousands of infants who have been born with CDH in the United States since the year 2000, only 50 percent have survived; and

WHEREAS, while many people living in Nevada who have been diagnosed with CDH have survived, there are many Nevada families who have endured the horrible pain and grief associated with the loss of a loved one due to CDH; and

WHEREAS, persons living with CDH often require multiple surgeries and face possible medical complications beyond initial diagnosis, including heart defects, pulmonary complications, gastric and intestinal problems, developmental delays, and many require respiratory and medicinal support throughout their lives; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to protecting the health and welfare of all who live in this state, and supports efforts to increase awareness regarding harmful diseases and disorders such as CDH in order to promote earlier diagnoses and intervention, more effective treatment methods, and greater support for Nevada families touched by CDH;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  April 19, 2016
