WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and, the second most common cause of deaths for both men and women; and

WHEREAS, approximately every three minutes, someone in the United States is diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and approximately every ten minutes, a life is tragically lost to colorectal cancer; and

WHEREAS, the vast majority of colorectal cancer deaths can be prevented through proper screening and early detection, and earlier diagnoses among those who are fifty years of age and older would reduce the death rate from colorectal cancer by as much as 70%; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is home to a number of dedicated organizations working to raise awareness regarding the critical importance of early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer, including the Nevada Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Action Network, whose efforts are helping to save lives and enhance the quality of life for Nevada's citizens; and

WHEREAS, throughout the month of March, community initiatives and events are being held across Nevada to promote a broader understanding of the risks associated with colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada commends the dedicated organizations, advocates, and public health experts working to promote research and public awareness regarding colorectal cancer, with continued commitment to supporting efforts that help support healthy and vibrant families and communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  March 28, 2016 as

 COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS DAY IN NEVADA
