WHEREAS, the children and young people of Nevada are our future and are deserving of a safe and nurturing environment in which they are able to learn, to thrive, and to succeed while they pursue their dreams; and

WHEREAS, children who come of age in safe and nurturing environments are more likely to develop into successful, productive adults who make positive life choices and who contribute to the overall improvement of society as a whole; and

WHEREAS, child abuse is a serious issue that poses long-term challenges to the development of children, often occurring in situations in which adults confront highly stressful circumstances without knowledge of the assistance and resources that may be available to them; and

WHEREAS, many instances of child abuse may be preventable through higher levels of community engagement, expanded access to supportive services, greater efforts to alleviate poverty, increased education initiatives, and other public health and wellness programs; and

WHEREAS, throughout the month of April, Nevadans from all parts of the state will display pinwheels and plant pinwheel gardens as a symbolic expression of our state's collective commitment to protecting our children and providing them with safe, positive, and nurturing environments;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim  April 2016

 CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH IN NEVADA
