WHEREAS, the State of Nevada is committed to protecting the safety, health and welfare of all who live in and visit this state; and

WHEREAS, maintaining a safe blood supply is a critical public health need, as life-saving blood transfusions are needed in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities every day across the nation; and

WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are more than 9.5 million blood donors in the United States and an estimated 5 million patients who receive blood annually; and

WHEREAS, one pint of blood can save the lives of up to three patients, and although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, less than 10% of that eligible population actually participate in blood donation each year; and

WHEREAS, Nevada is home to a number of committed public service and private sector organizations working to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation, including the American Red Cross, United Blood Services, Touro University, Nevada, The Dr. Daliah Show , and many others; and

WHEREAS, the State of Nevada commends the volunteers, community leader, and organizations working across the state to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation, and encourages all eligible Nevadans to support efforts to meet this critical need and help maintain a safe blood supply;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BRIAN SANDOVAL, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim   April 23, 2016 as

 BLOOD DONATION DAY IN NEVADA
